Child Welfare

'To fulfil the ambition for a more peaceful world depends so much on how we teach children respect and tolerance. That is just one reason why effective anti-bullying strategy is so important.’Louise Burfitt-Dons

In 1999, moved by the number of young children in the UK committing suicide under the age of 16 Louise began researching the true picture of bullying amongst school children. A mother of two, she found that the advice given was inadequate and unhelpful and wrote a set of compelling monologues to highlight the discomfort of sensitive children who were likely to be victimised. Unable to get two of the major charities to tackle the subject of psychological bullying because it was considered too difficult to pinpoint she began her own campaign.

After travelling around the country promoting the use of the monologues and speaking in schools, she set up the charitable organisation Act Against Bullying to be able to help young victims by providing practical assistance as well as raising awareness of the insidiousness of the modern bullying. In 2002 she designed the Cool to be Kind campaign to emphasise the importance of kindness in modern society as an anti-bullying initiative. To date hundreds of schools across the country have supported it from displaying posters to holding in-school competitions.

Louise has appeared on numerous TV and radio programmes both in the UK and overseas talking about the work of Act Against Bullying. She is the author of the original Act Against Bullying monologues, a range of anti-bullying advisory leaflets and the creative force behind the design and implementation of the charity’s campaigns.

Over the past ten years Act against Bullying has played a significant part in the lives of thousands of children worldwide.
